DSC00016The Queensland Police Service was formally established on January 1, 1864 with a strength of 287 officers serving a population of 61,467.

Back then correspondence was by handwritten letter and moved between stations by horses of Cobb & Co Coach, or by telegram, a far cry from the emails of today.

Computers were only considered for use by police in 1971 whereas today’s officers are being issued iPads. Constable Ryan compares the weight of a 1980’s Policeman’s Manual with his iPad. He holds book 2 of a two volume set, each weighing 3kg!

Q150 PhotoWhilst researching for our Q150 display at the Childers Festival we also discovered a 1944 Prosecutions Log Book for Childers Police Station. Volunteer in Policing, Barry takes a closer look at the handwritten entries.

If you would like to learn more about the history of the Queensland Police Service why not visit our display at the Childers Festival on Sunday.
